Akilak’s Adventure, written by debut children’s book author Deborah Kigjugalik Webster with illustrations by Charlene Chua, launched this week at Kaleidoscope Kids’ Books in Ottawa. Deborah gave a reading of her book accompanied by her daughter Nicole, who inspired the imaginative main character, Akilak. Nunatsiaq News covered the event, which was also attended by Manitok Thompson, Nunavut’s first female cabinet minister.
“Inuit children need to see and identify with the landscape and the animals that are part of their everyday world, Thompson said, which is why books such as Akilak’s Adventure are important.” — Nunatsiaq News
