Nunatsiaq News interviewed Angela Hovak Johnston about her upcoming book, Reawakening Our Ancestors’ Lines: Revitalizing Inuit Traditional Tattooing.

The book chronicles Johnston’s project to bring back the traditional Inuit method of tattooing using bone needles and caribou sinew soaked in seal oil, sod, or soot. After learning how to tattoo others, Johnston then brought her skills to Inuit women in her home community of Kugluktuk, Nunavut. The photos and stories of the women she tattooed are collected in Reawakening Our Ancestors’ Lines, which comes out in November 2017.
